Maintaining Confidence in Your Career

It’s no question that confidence is key to life and career success. But how do maintain confidence and accomplish your short and long-term goals?

The latest episode of my Dream Living Podcast focuses on Confidence. Me and my guest, friend and 20+ year HR professional, Terri Thomas share our keys and tips to maintaining confidence in your career and share our personal journeys as well. Have we always been confident? Find out by listening to this podcast episode.

Here are a few tips that summarize our discussion:

1. Maintain a Confident Mindset

What is a confident mindset and how do you maintain it? It’s about focusing on your strengths – what you do well. Focusing on the positive, what you can control and how problems can be solved.

It aligns with the idea of a growth mindset, the belief that through hard work and dedication, you can grow and develop. Learning from mistakes and applying what you learned to move forward and get better.

When you maintain a confident or growth mindset you are more likely to have better performance on the job, which will ultimately lead to better career opportunities. It’s required if you expect to have career success.

2. Speak-Up / Be Visible

Speaking up is a sign of confidence. It’s important to let your thoughts be known to your team, colleagues and leaders because it demonstrates your contributions to the team and makes you visible to others. You are at work to do a job and people want to hear and know what you have to say.

If you want more opportunities, speaking up and being visible is critical. Raise your hand to get involved in projects that are visible. Your experiences will help you grow, develop and make you more visible to others at the same time. The more you perform well and make yourself visible, the more career opportunities will come your way

3. Be Bold / Take Risks

Taking risks in your career is also important to career success. Raising your hand to do things that are out of your comfort zone requires confidence and will also result in your personal growth and development. Take risks and raise your hand when opportunities arise. Make a recommendation to solve a problem and volunteer to take the lead. The more you get involved in uncomfortable situations, the more you grow and develop, and your confidence gets a boost as a bonus.

4. Visualize Success

If situations arise in the workplace where you are uncomfortable, don’t let the narratives in your head tell you that you can’t do something. Take the time to prepare and visualize your success in the situation. There is something to be said about visualization because it moves you toward confidence – seeing yourself achieve success before the situation occurs. Make it a practice and watch your confidence improve.

5. Get a Coach

The role of a coach is to help create more awareness in your life and achieve specific life goals – including building your confidence. I have personally used coaching to help me get clarity in specific areas of my life. I have also helped many others as a Life, Career and Executive coach. I start with an initial consultation to discuss how we might work together, then create a package that best suits the situation.
